So you don’t live at the beach and can’t afford to take a vacation to write your marriage proposal in the sand. Snow can be even better. There is something romantic about snow. Maybe it is the cuddling that is involved from being cold outside. No need to wonder, just go for it.
Proposing to your lady by writing it in the snow is fairly easy to do. The main thing you will want to do is find the location where you want to write it out. Of course, it has to snow, but we will just assume that you live somewhere where snow is pretty likely. Here in Kentucky you may have to wait for a couple of years before there is enough snow to actually write in. So assuming that you have regular snow and the ring ready to go, then let’s figure out a way to make this thing sing.
First of all, check out our section on how to write things in the ground. This covers some of the basics for any type of proposal using lettering on the ground, whether it is snow, sand, or grass. After you check that section out then come back here and we will get started on planning so you can not only do something like the picture below, but also make an entire day out of it.

Hopefully you got some good tips from the article on ground writing. Now let’s plan out your special day. Since it is tough to predict when it will snow, you will have to be glued to the weather channel for a while to pick the right day. If you can, let your boss know ahead of time that you are planning this type of creative proposal so that when the time is right, he or she will understand if you need to call in or take a partial day to make it happen. There are a couple of scenarios that you can work with.
If you live together, pulling this one off is tough because you will need to find a way to get the snow writing done without her knowing about it. This one is so tricky, I am not sure I would try to pull it off without some help from friends. You will have to find a way to keep her away from the windows for a while during the writing. Unless of course, you want her to watch the proposal as it unfolds. That could be a cool way to do it, but it may be a bit of a drawn out process, and she will get it pretty quickly. So you may not even get finished before she says yes. You could always have a group of friends spell it for you while the two of you watch from inside the house. Each friend could work on their own word. So you would need 5 friends to help with this one. “Bekah Will You Marry Me” is 5 words. You could have a sixth person make the question mark as well. Doing it this way, they all get done at the same time.
You could start off by calling her work and having her boss tell her she does not need to come to work that day if she is not off already. Then you can start off by “calling in” as well. It will seem romantic and spontaneous that you took the opportunity to be off with her. Little does she know, a great deal of planning went into it. Then you should make her breakfast in bed. Something simple like eggs and toast will do but a couple of nice slices of french toast can also do the trick. If she is a coffee drinker, make sure you make her favorite kind. While you are making breakfast, you can call your helpers to come over and get ready.
Whenever you are ready for them to start, preferably after you have finished eating, text them to get into position. Once each person is standing where they are going to start their word, have the leader text you. His cue to start will be when you come to the window with her. Get her out of bed by telling her she needs to come to the window to look at the snow. Once you pull the curtains back, your friends should start. She will certainly be surprised…and hopefully say yes.
Once she says yes to your snow proposal, it is time to close the curtains and “thank her” for saying yes and for being such a great girlfriend. Afterwards, she will need a few hours to tell her friends and family she is engaged. Later in the afternoon you can take her sledding or ice skating and then to dinner and a movie. Giving her a ring is not just a few minutes and then you are done. You should turn her special moment into an entire day. And you will be gearing up for the rest of your life. Never lose the romance.
While there is nothing wrong with this one, especially if you live in a place where you have a second story or in an apartment on a higher floor, I would probably not choose to do this one myself. I would get a group of my friends together and have them help me spell out the snow proposal on the back side of one of the dams in our town. Doing it at the main dam would be tough to do because so many people use it to sled down when it snows. Lucky for me (and many communities), there are two other dams that are lesser know and used even less. Once this is done, you can ask her to go sledding with you. She most likely will not be able to see the lettering from the top. You should go down first to “test it out” and when you reach the bottom, have her come down behind you. It should go without saying, but I will say it anyway. Make sure you do not go down the hill through your proposal lettering. Once she gets to the bottom and you guys laugh in celebration of your epic sled run, she will turn around and see your marriage proposal. When she turns back around you should be on your knee with the ring.
All the other parts of the day will still apply. Breakfast in bed, dinner, movie, etc. If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace, you can get a nice fire going and have a blanket on the floor with some flowers, wine and dinner. You can get a movie, but don’t be too heartbroken if you don’t get to watch it. I am pretty sure it won’t happen…and for a very good reason.
If you want to get real crazy with this creative proposal idea, instead of spelling the words out you could make blanks in the snow (think hangman) and have her choose letters. When she picks a letter you can text it to your buddy and they can put the letter(s) down as she guesses them. Or you could give her a megaphone and let her say the letters through it. That might get annoying after a while, but it would be cool for her to say yes to you through a megaphone.

Lastly, while you are feeling romantic, show her just a fraction of how much you love her by sending a bouquet of flowers tomorrow. You will be the biggest stud she knows.
